Join ceramic artists Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell for a weekend of material processing and testing at their studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Participants will learn the basics of working with locally sourced materials and will have the opportunity to create their own unique test blends made with materials collected from around the state. Each participant will use these materials to create clay bodies, slips, and glazes, plus small objects. Open to all skill levels. Participants are welcome to bring local clays from their own regions to test.

In this workshop, participants will learn coil building techniques which can be used to create a variety of shapes with historical and contemporary references. By focusing on methods to aid efficiency and durability, the information provided will allow participants to build quickly and work on a larger scale. Participants will be encouraged to combine these techniques with other making methods to produce sculptural vessels and objects. Students will be given the materials, time, and guidance needed to complete a unique sculptural piece, 12x12x12” or smaller, fired to ^6 in oxidation. Open to all skill levels.

Learn the foundations of working with local clays, minerals and plant resources. This workshop will provide instruction on identifying, collecting, processing, and testing a variety of natural materials occurring along the Mendocino coastline. Participants will learn how to use these resources to develop clay bodies, slips, and glazes that will be fired to cone 10 in gas reduction. Experimental loading techniques for enhanced atmospheric effects will also be shared. Topics and testing methods discussed in this workshop will easily translate to any home studio practice.
